7 tips for giving up smoking

You’ve made up your mind: no more cigarettes! You may have read our article on the risks of smoking and decided to stop. The road to a life without tobacco may seem long and difficult, but with the right tips, you can make it! We’ve put together 7 effective tips to help you say goodbye to cigarettes!

1. Set a quit date

Choose a date to stop smoking. This will give you enough time to prepare without delaying your decision too much. Make a note of this date and start preparing for the big day!

2. Separate yourself from anything that might make you want to smoke

Ashtrays, lighters, cigarette packets – get rid of everything to avoid being tempted to have a cigarette. During breaks with colleagues, avoid smokers. The smell of smoke can make you want to start again!

3. Change your habits

Make a note of the times and situations when you most feel the need to smoke. Is it after meals, with coffee, or when you’re stressed? Knowing the times that make you want to smoke the most will help you avoid them or find healthy alternatives. Then modify your daily routines accordingly. For example, if you smoke with your morning coffee, try drinking your coffee in a place where smoking is prohibited. Replace cigarette breaks with walking or toilet breaks.

4. Use nicotine substitutes

Nicotine substitutes such as chewing gum or patches can help reduce cravings and therefore the desire to smoke. Don’t hesitate to talk to your pharmacist or doctor to find the best option for you.

5. Look after yourself

A balanced diet and exercise can help reduce cravings and improve your mood. Physical activity releases endorphins, which can compensate for nicotine withdrawal. And don’t hesitate to talk to your nutritionist about balanced meals if you feel like you’re eating more after you’ve stopped smoking.

6. Find support

Talking about your decision to stop smoking with friends, family or support groups can make a big difference! Maybe you can even quit smoking with your group of friends. Chances are they’ll be proud of you and offer you the emotional support you need. Whatever the case, MyHealth has your back!

7. Don’t have ‘just one last fag

You’re at a party or you want to reward yourself after a month’s abstinence and have ‘just one last fag’. And then the drama begins… Many people have relapsed after ‘that last fag’. To avoid a relapse, you need to avoid smoking at all costs, even if it’s just occasionally! One cigarette can be enough to ruin the efforts you’ve made over many weeks!

To stop smoking, stay positive and patient

Quitting smoking is a process that takes time. It’s normal to have down moments. Your body will need time to get used to a life without tobacco. Every day without smoking is a victory. By applying these tips and remaining determined, you will increase your chances of successfully quitting smoking. Remember that every small step counts and that you are not alone in this journey. Good luck and congratulations on your decision to live a healthier life without tobacco!
