How to prevent and care for dry skin in winter

Winter can be a rough time for your skin, with the cold weather, low humidity, and indoor heating all contributing to dryness and discomfort. But luckily there are ways to prevent it! Here are some key causes of dry skin in winter and effective tips on how to take care of it.

Why does skin become dry in winter?

Several factors contribute to dry skin during the winter months:

    • Low humidity: Winter is here and it’s cold, so you turn up the heater. The cold air outside and the dry indoor heat from heating systems like fireplaces, space heaters, and central heating reduce the humidity levels, causing the moisture on your skin to evaporate quickly.
    • Hot showers and baths: Nothing beats a hot shower or bath when you are feeling cold. But using very hot water strips your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.
    • Harsh soaps and detergents: Washing hands is good, especially if you don’t want to catch a cold. But many common soaps and shampoos are designed to remove oil, including the skin’s natural oils, which can exacerbate dryness.
    • Poor diet: If a burger never killed nobody, but consuming too much junk and unhealthy food, along with nutritional deficiencies, can impact your skin’s health and lead to dryness.
    • Medical treatments and conditions: Certain medical treatments and pre-existing skin conditions like psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and eczema can worsen during winter.
    • Over-exfoliation: You might sometime exfoliate your skin to improve the appearance. You might even do a chemical peel. But if you are exfoliating too frequently, especially during the colder months, you may remove the skin’s natural barrier, which will lead to dryness.

Waht are the symptoms of dry skin

Dry skin can manifest in various ways, including:

    • Rough and tight skin: Skin may feel tight, especially after bathing or showering.
    • Peeling, scaling, or flaking: Visible signs of dryness can include peeling, scaling, or flaking skin.
    • Itching (Pruritus): Dry skin often leads to itching, which can be uncomfortable and disrupt sleep.
    • Ashy, gray skin: In severe cases, dry skin can appear ashy or gray.

8 Tips to avoid dry skin in winter

Here are some effective strategies to prevent and care for dry skin during the winter:

    1. Moisturize daily

Use a cream or petroleum-based moisturizer immediately after bathing or showering to lock in moisture. Apply the moisturizer to wet skin to help trap surface moisture.

    2. Use lukewarm water

Avoid using very hot water for showers and baths. Instead, opt for lukewarm water to preserve the skin’s natural oils.

    3. Limit soap and cleanser use

Cleanse your skin gently, avoiding harsh soaps and detergents.

    4. Humidify

Use a humidifier to add moisture back into the air, especially when indoor heating is in use. A humidifier setting of 40% to 60% can help replenish moisture in the top layer of your skin.

    5. Protect from the wind

Cover your face and use a petroleum-based lip balm to protect your skin from harsh winter winds.

    6. Avoid extreme cold

Be cautious of extreme cold temperatures, which can cause skin disorders or frostbite.

    7. Diet and supplements

Maintain a balanced diet rich in nutrients. Consider adding collagen supplements to your routine, as they can help retain moisture and improve skin elasticity. Collagen acts as a humectant, attracting and binding moisture to the skin. If you think you need supplements always check with your nutritionist first.

    8. Sun protection

Even in winter, it is crucial to use sunscreen when staying in the sun for too long, especially if you go skiing. It will protect your skin from UV light, which can stress the skin’s moisture barrier.

With these tips, your skin is ready to go for the winter! If dryness of your skin persists, despite following these tips, you may consider consulting a dermatologist.
